Ride to Bangabandhu Bridge

As soon as i was done with my casual activities of the whole day i felt a sudden urge to got for a night ride.I called few friends of mine and then depending on their affirmative responses i started to pack.Though finally only one friend of mine  agreed to go only i didn't give a damn and we got determined to see the beauty of the Bangabandhu Bridge at night.

Its winter and riding at night is both less tiring and thrilling. We surfed though the Google map and tried to find alternative routes to avoid high way- our effort went in vein but still since strike is going on we thought there can't be any better timing than this because number of buses and trucks in high way would be the least and obviously in this chilling cold of 15 degree Celsius no muggers or robbers will wait in the high way for waste, and our university was closed in the next day too.We had dinner together and set off. Pressure of vehicles was moderate until Gabtoli and then numbers thinned out.We were felt like riding into a horror film shot: it was both scary and thrilling to ride through the hovering dense fog on the high way. It was too dense to see more than a feet ahead and everything was grave-dark all around until a truck or bus passed by at intervals of few minutes."It was really fun.Everything was more thrilling than we expected ". I have been through this route before but in this foggy dark night it all seemed like a fresh new place, clean,no traffic,in a no man land. It began to go better after we crossed savar-it got chilling cold for which we had to ride faster to keep ourselves warm which infact was fun and saved our time. Roads got more spooky, deserted and dark and only 50 km away was Tangail city. The most scary things were the small plants that are planted beside the high way roads. Road to Tangail is newly constructed a straight, newly pitched 10 km road. Since we were riding fast and alone for a long time we fear began to crawl inside us slowly hence we jolt at times when we saw a dark shadow is standing near ahead- which later on have proved to be the plants, scare crows for vegetable cultivation made by the locals or the pile of wood and road side pillars. I wont lie that i was not scared.I was scared to the bone when i felt that i have been riding for too long and still the road is same,no more vehicles are coming and there was wild noises, rusting parallel to us. I started enchanting surah and paddled faster and we huddled together in the middle of the road so that if there were muggers hiding behind the bush at the road side they cant hit us or jump on us-"Fear of darkness". We began to paddle faster."Oh! I forgot! The shadow on the fog!" Once i saw a shadow on the fog,"remember the fog was dense " ,and my throat dried in fear , then i just paddled with all my strength to out run the shadow and discovered the shadow ran along since it was the silhouette of my Rahat who was just ahead of my front light.
However we crossed few police check points and felt a assurance in heart. And just when we were 30 km behind of our destination we saw a long line traffic and were too happy to pass though them since they were hardly moving - we felt safe finally.
As soon as we reached the end of the line a group of local police stopped us and started to search us for identification and interrogated us. We answered them accordingly but all of a sudden the SI, Prem Bondhu, of Tangail Model Police Station began to abuse us and blamed us that we were a part of criminal activities going on in this area where few minutes back a vehicle was set on fire."In my worst night mare even i have never experienced this type of things". The constables were also nodding and supporting him saying that the pumper, patch-kit and water bottle found in my backpack were used for making bombs. They searched us for money and found only few hundreds and nothing else which made them upset and angry but still we were the criminals there who were wearing plastic helmets. The officer kicked us, slapped us and then took away our helmets and sunglasses then threw them on the road where the speeding trucks smashed them to the ground- i felt like that would be the end. They forced us to call our families and i felt like crying out loud in pain when they were kicking my cycle and broke my accessories. I tried heard to explain them, showed our endomondo routes, university id cards, but they we not willing to hear anything, they just went on hitting us and threw loathsome words on us. We could not go father then the point you can see on the map up-front.Our Ride ends here at around  3 30 am.
"I accept the country in under critical situation and political turbulence is going on but does that mean we will hide within our home in fear and encourage the opposition and let their event be successful or should it be like the government will encourage people to do all their activities and provide protection to those who might need it instead of harassing student of private university and arresting them just because police has the right to interrogate and suspect anyone at any time ?Does that right  make a cyclist a on-looker for criminals who would ride for 100km to get info and  represent cycle accessories as tools for bombing.

"I feel scared to go out now and riding in these days seems like a dream!"

Many cyclist from Bangladesh has been cycling day and night and never faced a problem, might have never heard of it either. But 'bhaiya' lets not risk it-if possible take a group of at least 5 or else don't go and i would completely discourage ride at night because there wont be anyone to see what happened to you people and why. "Remember if you go to jail for once in Bangladesh you will be a criminal in everyone's eyes and forever". If needed go through this video to know what happens at night!
NB:This post is to warn cyclist/tourist about our current country situation! I don't want justice or sympathy!

-happy cycling
-stay safe

Ride To Rema Kalenga Reserved Forest

 The journey begins!

It was my first hill-ride with Trekkers Bd. According to the plan I got onto the truck with my cycle.I was a baffled to see 10-15 cycle parked in the front side of the truck and all the riders huddled together, in their mood of euphoria .I got on along with my fellow friend from Narayangonj and the founder of Trekkers Bd,Tarik bhai. As soon as we sat and set ourselves on the truck it started drizzling and started chilling our bones. I had no raincoat and a mobile in my pocket and was feeling helpless among all unknown faces. It was a shower of worries in the form of icy cold water. The trip would have been my worst trip if Tariq bhai didnt have a spare rain coat which me and Rifat shared throughout the night until Shreemangal! It rained throughtout the day and we woke up in a bright chilled morning.

In the morning
This is how we looked in the morning.Took a break brushed our teeth, had tea and then set for Lawachara National Park.Through greenery we went on along with the drizzling and made a frustrating pause at Lawachara: authority didn't let us in with our cycles. With a dull mood and desperate hearts we began to prepare our cycles because we would  start here and rest of the people went in quest for the restroom! :P
As soon as we started paddling we all were back to our spirit: the roads we too clean and well pitched,it was  greener and more peaceful than i have ever seen.I was very excited after all it was my first trip.

The rain went on and on. As if someone blessed us with rain which would not stop any how.Though miraculously we found that few areas are dry like bones and there was no sign of rain, but before we dried ourselves enough we got into the neighboring areas where it was flooding literary.I forgot the names of the routes through which we have been through thus i am just sharing the moment without where actually it all happened. Our tires all got heavy and sticky with sticky-red mud of Sylhet. Finally we reached a river and across which awaited our destination,Rema.

The entry into the forest was a very great start. It still flashes in my brain. The paths we all wet and the mud was washed away thus the up-going hill got tricky and slippery.WE all rushed to go up one after another in a friendly race manner. Most of them succeed and others ....
"I remind the rain was on ". The ups and downs and rushing between bushes began. The friendly monster of rainy day, leeches started to get into our pants and t-shirts. As if accidentally we all got into a garden of leeches. At least 4-5 of us got victim of the blood sucker;my first experience of leech bite was in this trip.It was  a day full of adrenalin rush. The thrill of getting down from a steep, muddy and slippery hill can never be expressed in words.I have tried to collects photos as much as possible and uploaded them, since photos would convey more information then my words would and words are boring too!

This tour can give you a hint about how a off road trail can be and how thrilling a ride might be.Due to weather difficulties our tour got messy and  lack of photos and videos has limited my words for explaining how awesome this trip might be for you.Bandhu Garage sponsored by Grameen Phone has been there too with bunch of riders and i am sharing their video so that you might get a better understanding of the thrill!
(I was not selected for the trip!)

Photos and videos are Collected from Trekker Bd and Bandhu Garage

MONUMENTS OF 1971

After hard earned liberation war in Bangladesh people of Bangladesh has made thousand of monument in memory of the martyred. Among which Shahid Minar-Dhaka,Ahsan Manzil and Sarwardi Uddan ,National Martyr's memorialt-Savar, and  Martyred Intellectual Memorials are the most well known ones.

In TOUR TO OLD DHAKA you can find about Shahid Minar,Ahsan Manzil.

Sarwardi Uddan
Sarwardi Uddan will fall in the same route if you enter Dhaka University through Sahabag, dhaka. However i have linked the map to the pic. However if you go to Sarwaradi you can see grave of A. K. Fazlul Huq, Huseyn Shaheed ,Suhrawardyand Khwaja Nazimuddin and neighbouring the Uddan is Bangla Achademy, and hindu temple both of which bears memory of 1971.

Only 38 km away from Dhaka. And you will find Jahangirnagar University on the way, a small land for migratory birds. Its better if you can contact the cyclist group Jahangirnagar University before you set off. They might help  to show you around.

BACKYARD OF NATIONAL MARTYRED MONUMENT
Few kms ahead is NATIONAL MARTYRED MONUMENT  with a huge yard in front and great plantation all around the territory. No cycle parking facility, neither cycles are allowed to be parked in. You might talk to the officer in charge whose office is right beside the main gate and request him to park you cycle beside his office. I got a permission and a space to keep my cycle and roam around with my friends from BRAC UNIVERSITY CYCLIST CLUB from him.
N.B: NO ONE WILL BE GUARDING YOUR CYCLE. PARK AT YOUR OWN RISK.

OLD DHAKA

Most of the entrance of Old Dhaka-"Puran Dhaka" is through DHAKA UNIVERSITY. Cycling around the whole campus is also fun. It has

# Less congestion than the main road
#Hundreds of types of food stalls at Hakim chattar, TSC, Chobir hat. Almost every where there will be a cart or mobile shop/road side stall.
# Peaceful place to hangout through out the day
Shahid Minar

Dhaka university still has the scent of our liberation war in 1971. And if you are in Dhaka University are then Shahid Minar is in the neighborhood. Just have a peek, recall the freedom we earned and vow a respect towards the brave hearts who first raised the voices against the oppression. Since the language movement started from Dhaka University you will find many university halls, sculptures throughout the university area which bears memories from 1971.
Curzon Hall

Some university halls' restrictions are very low thus you might get opportunities to paddle through. You can paddle in Sahidullah hall, apart if they consider you a threat or take it as trespassing. Sahidullah hall has its big field, with basket  ball court and for me the huge 'Koroi' tree at the edge of the mid-field is more  fascinating. As soon as the sun begins to fall flock of birds start to take over the tree. Its a huge tree that holds thousands of parrots, sparrow and crows for the night. Within hours the whole area turns into a fish-market with their cowing and chirping.
A few step ahead there is a big pond for waddling around and next to it is the Curzon Hall.

However enough 'ghura ghuri' roaming around Dhaka University. Lets get into puran Dhaka ....

The map will guide you to Dhaka University, Dhakeshwari Temple, Lalbag fort, Ahsan Manzil . All these spots are filed into a single route.

Dhakeswari temple

Dhakeswari is our national temple thus it is always under police surveillance and fest are common scenario. And if you are lucky enough you might get to have "prasad",if there is a Puja going on.There are enough guards at the main gate thus cyclist might ask for help and I hope they will take enough care of it, I would suggest Hindu cyclists to walk forward and talk.

Ahsan Manzil
lablag fort
If you wanna know about Ahsan Monzil , Lalbag fort or Dakeswari temple just click the blue color links. In both Lalbag and Ahsan Monzil there is cycle parking facility,in fact don't dare to park your cycle in those two locations. These places are always crowded but filled with pick-pockets and muggers. The only option I see is going in a group and then dividing the group into two sub-groups in which one group will chit-chat outside and keep an eye on the cycles and then after an hour the next group shall go keeping the first group in guard of the cycle.

Most importantly as you get into 'puran dhaka' don't forget  to get the taste of Hazir biriyani. "After all a good meal can give you a good day"... :p

Ride to Gazipur

A hectic road towards the outskirt of Dhaka city: routined jam, occasional road constructions and sewage lines-repair has nominated this road as the second worst road of my cycling experience.
At the backyard of
Hazrat shahjalal international airport
I started in an early morning of winter: roads were comparably less congested and traffic was less.
Stopping by Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and then getting to see the flights taking off  at the back yard can be a great experience for all.
From my personal experience I would suggest riders to avoid the main roads-" air is all dusty and stinky on wards after airport".
However after crossing Tongi it will begin to seem greener. Kilometers of vegetation done by the locals and the Forest Ministry Of Bangladesh.

A random peek into the picnic spots
Me and Rahat
Now and then picnic and film-shooting spots will knock you to peak in. " Follow your heart"- the red soil, and the green vegetation will take you away to a different land of mystery and I guarantee anyone will love this experience. And if you can have a friend who can have fun and is a good companion then paddle on man!
Bhawal National Park will be at the porch soon enough......

Entrance of Bhawal National Park
Entrance of Bhawal National Park
A break at this enormous land of trees ,birds and lake and roaming around on horse back will gift you a sweet memory for life. In case of emergency you might take a short energizing nap or lay for a while in their well maintained rest houses.
Do not get too stuck there as there are more to see-" I know this place deserves a stay over :p ".

For the whole journey you can follow my route.
Now i am at my last spot for the trip:

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park

Main entrance

After seeing the main gate I didn't expect the park to blow my ,mind the way it did.
Video, article, website, facebook page  are not enough to uphold the beauty of this park to you.
tiger behind the window of the bus
There are no cycle parking facility, you need to park at your own risk - I would suggest you all to park it beside a restaurant, where you must have had snacks/lunch and tipped the waiter extra bucks.

Among everything I loved few things the most:
1. Roaming around the park on a giant, ELEPHANT.
2. Walking through the butterfly garden and seeing the process of breeding in real-" It was fabulous".
3.Walking inside the birds' cage, especially the MACAW WORLD-" never seen such a great collection of birds !"
4. Roaming among the wild animals on bus-" for the first time witnessed wild carnivores and herbivores outside the cage. In fact I watched them few inches away-thrilling  "

Simple route, roaming around the tigers, meeting the vultures , sun-bathing with crocodiles, dancing with the butterflies and singing with birds will compel you to visit again.

Watch a video!

N.B: Take a healthy wallet for the trip!

Cycling gives me wings- inside the heritage museum, safari park

Tour To Noria

Padma is only 7 km from Kazir hat
Kazir hat,Shariatpur
Shariatpur is my native home District;in fact i was was born there. I roamed around different City Corporations, remote villages and towns with my girlfriend,Talus-2. I could never have been able to see my district such closely if she wasn't with me.With her I rode through paddy fields, tunnels of trees, and been to places where I never thought of going.

This tunnel of greenery will lead you

Its really easy to go to Shariatpur from DHAKA only around 70km+/-. From Mawa, Munshiganj every one hour launch sets off for Majikandi. And it takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes to cross the Padma River. Kazir Hat,the largest bazzar, in SHARIATPUR district is only around 7 km from ajikandi from Kazir hat.Kazir hut have routes to all parts of the whole district.

NOREA city corporation:

Direction:Majirghat-kazir hut-Zajira-Bilaspur-Norea
Bilaspur-Norea Road

Rosgolla
Jaker sweetmit,Norea Bazar,Norea,Shariatpur
Norea is also famous for its soft and yummy sweet (namely Rosgolla). These small balls of clouds, Rosgolla were so tasty that still today I remember its scent and taste. Hence I took picture of the shop and the sweets so that those who goes there can have  the same heart-touching taste as I had.

Norea is currently famous for its newly established park,Modern Fantasy park. The only park in Shariatpur district. The park was established in 2009;but since it is located in a remote area of Norea it took time to gain its popularity.
Monkey
Deer

Pecock

crocodile
Its financed by Dr.Motin himself only. And people are excited to have a park like this in their village. The park is a combination of both amusement park and a zoo.
It has cable cars, rides for kids and few animals in the mini zoo and a small picnic spot.

Though its not much but
still for people of Norea it  brought hope, only park for holidays and the authority is trying to extend their project, buy more lands, animals and rides and present the park in a better way.

Tour to Munshiganj

Baligaon,Munshiganj
Baligaon,Munshiganj
My first cycling tour was around 30 km (I don't remember precisely!!).
And that was in Munshiganj. .Since it was near to my home town, Narayangonj, I often go there. Each and every time I have been amazed to discover such a beautiful town which had existed all these years in my neighborhood and i didn't notice. Munshigonj is full of greenery, the roads are clean and smooth pitched, less crowded (few areas have no dwelling at all), people are friendly and foods are cheap and tasty (yummy!!).
This made me even more crazier for cycling and I began to wander in nature, move through new towns and streets. Then I moved on, whenever I felt a bit low, I just put my feet on paddle and was gone for the day.....
Cycling has injected happiness into my blood......
Resettlement site at Kumarbhog,Louhajong,Munshiganj under Padma Multipupose Bridge Project

Munshiganj is like a smart, developed village to me.
Main transportation is :buses, polly-bikes, motor-bikes and bicycles.
But unfortunately number of motor-bikes are more than bicycles which are affecting the nature of this beautiful villages along with buses, trucks and other motorized vehicle. At-least one out of three families own a motor-bike.To them motor-bike represents youth, energy, wealth and power. And owning a motor bike has turned into a trend among them.

I have been there many times. And NCC(Narayanganj CyclistClub) members visit there often. Many cyclist from Dhaka and beyond have also been there. I was dumbfounded when a kid, around 10, screamed out"BD CYCLIST" while I was gushing past him. They are being inspired in cycling and media has played a great role so far. Hopefully people of Munshiganj would also contribute in gifting a greener world to their next generation.
